Here in Corolla and the Currituck beaches, we are known for fun in the sun. A pair of sunglasses, a big floppy hat, and a beach chair top the list for spring and summer vacation necessities when you visit. If we could control the weather, we’d offer infinite sunny days and cool breezes to ensure an unforgettable stay for you and your family.
Alas, once in a while the forecasts get it wrong. We’re not saying it could or will rain during your vacation, but it’s good to be prepared for any situation. Remain optimistic but have an umbrella in the car just in case, along with a Plan B on days that become a bit too wet for relaxing on the shore.
There’s still much to do around here during April–and May, June, and July–showers.
History Lessons. When the weather is not ideal for the beach, it’s the perfect time to visit Currituck and Historic Corolla’s many attractions. Reserve a tour of the early 20th century mansion, Whalehead, and learn more about the area’s flora and fauna at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education. You can also discover our county’s nautical history at the Currituck Maritime Museum and the Currituck Beach Light Station.
Retail Therapy. Make the rounds of Corolla’s unique and lively shops while you wait for the rain to subside. Find everything from locally-made treats and souvenirs, artwork and sea glass jewelry, that extra book for the beach, games and puzzles, and much more.
Mainland Fun. When the weather calls for several hours of misting rain and puddles, take the kids to the mainland for some indoor fun. Digger’s Dungeon, home of the famous Grave Digger monster truck, offers a bit of adventure and local history, while Flipper’s Arcade in Grandy has a wide selection of video and arcade games, pinball and laser tag guaranteed to cure boredom. If you have passes for the H2OBX Waterpark, they can be honored in rainy weather so long as there’s no lightning.
Propose A Toast. Nothing cheers up a rainy day like good friends and a round of drinks. Currituck’s wine, beer and spirits trail offers a delicious assortment to try by the glass or flight. Be sure to check your favorite restaurants in town for happy hour specials to sip and savor while you wait for sunnier days.
Fun In The House! You may already have everything you need for rainy day fun in your vacation home. Some rentals come with different amenities like game rooms and in-home theaters. Pick up some ice cream from any of our local dessert spots and order a pizza for a cozy family night.
When the skies clear and the sun shines again, you’ll know what to do and where to go. If you still need more ideas, check out our online visitor’s guide and be sure to download the free Currituck OBX app for deals from local restaurants and shops.
